Having a news section on a homepage (and keeping it up to date) is a nice thing to have because it shows that good things are happening and that the company is alive and well. However, screen real estate on a homepage is extremely valuable and scarce, so having a long list of recent events on the page won’t work. Whatever will we do?
So we have a box on the page that is tall enough to support a single event, yet it actually contains several, and automatically scrolls every six seconds to the next item. There’s also a tiny menu on the right side that lets the user manually go through each news item if they want.
You can see the final result on the current Arena Solutions homepage.
The HTML involved here is a basic ordered list. The rest is accomplished through the magic of jQuery (you can view my source code here). The tiny menu on the right is created dynamically, with a link for each list item in the news list.
